Last Monday (Memorial Day) our horses got stuck in some barbed wire fence and got some major cuts. Usually we put them in their pen for the night, but we had left them out this one time on Sunday. The next morning there was a blood trail on the road, so Dave followed it and found both Haley and the baby, with big, gaping wounds.
Haley got her leg ripped open with a big glob of muscle hanging out, and the baby got his chest ripped open with muscle hanging out.
We slowly got them back home then started making phone calls to different friends.
First we had some ranchers come look, and they said just to put them down, they would never be ok again.
Then we had another friend come, and he ended up sewing their wounds closed. That was a major struggle! Haley kept fighting it, so they tied her up and knocked her to the ground. She was bleeding all over the place (sometimes it was just pouring out), and she kept fighting. But they finally got her sewed up. The baby fought, but they were able to hold him down easier.
After they were done being sewed, they both looked terrible! Haley's eye was swollen shut from rubbing on the ground and she was weak from the loss of blood.
Another friend came over and showed us how to clean them everyday, twice a day, and what to put on them.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any before pictures, but here is a picture right after it was sewed up. The foam is from hydrogen peroxide.
These are pictures of the baby's chest sewed up.
Here is Haley after a few days. It is oozing and gross, but seems to be healing, maybe.
She walks, but stumbles a lot, so we aren't sure how she will be. The baby limps a little, but not too bad.
Everyday we clean both of them and put ointment on, and they are taking antibiotics to help with the infection.
We will just wait and see what happens!
We are so thankful for all the great friends we have here that are so willing to come help us anytime we need something!

Oh. That just breaks my heart. I hope they are doing better. I know you are doing all you can with all the cleaning, antibiotics and special care you are giving them.a
