We were invited to dinner at our Bishop's house on Tuesday night. We had a fun time getting to know him and his wife, and stayed a while visiting with them. It was getting late so we decided we better go. The Bishop told us to watch out for elk on our way home. Well, we were a couple miles from home when all of a sudden there were 4 or 5 elk crossing the road. Dave couldn't stop fast enough, and we ended up hitting one. We were lucky to not hit it head on, it turned around at the last minute. We hit it on the front and driver's side. The airbags didn't go off, we were lucky with that too. The elk's back legs were broken and it was sitting down in the highway. It started crying for its friends- it was a horrible sound. We knew we couldn't leave it in the middle of the road, so Dave got out and had to drag it by the back legs to the side of the road. Then we came home and he got a guy to help him. They went back and shot it and called the sheriff. It is against the law in New Mexico to keep animals that you have hit, so they didn't let him keep it, but they said they would do something with it, and it wouldn't go to waste.
Our car had some damage, but we were very blessed it wasn't any worse, and none of us were hurt, just a little traumatized!
